Many expats are changing their minds about living in Thailand and considering moving to Vietnam. As Thailand’s Baht continues to rise there are fewer Western expats arriving in Thailand than ever before and a significant amount of working expats under 60 years have now left Thailand for good. Thailand is not cheap anymore, especially as it’s harder and harder to find affordable housing as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya are fast becoming as expensive as any other major tourist city.

Increased costs across the board are hitting many retirees where it hurts, as is the high baht, changes to the long-stay non-immigrant O-A visa, and now mandatory health insurance for anyone aged 50 and above as authorities are preparing guidelines to enforce the new rules.

Thailand and the expat scene really have changed monumentally over the years and with all the changes to visas, the dreaded 90-day reporting, which can take a better part of the day if you are in Bangkok. Changes to visa regulations and also to the perceived attitudes of some immigration departments aren’t helping, with a significant number of older expats leaving for Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

These expats moved to Thailand years ago because of the tropical weather, the low cost of living, the beaches, the food, and of course for the women, We know Vietnam weather is also nice, with a much cooler climate up North in Hanoi. Vietnam is also cheaper than Thailand. According to Numbeo, consumer prices in Bangkok are 27.92% higher than in Ho Chi Minh City and 43.05% higher than in Hanoi. There are also amazing beaches in Vietnam and exotic and cheap street food. But what do we know about the women? Who is better, a Thai girlfriend, or a Vietnamese girlfriend?

When you ask most guys where they would like to travel to Southeast Asia, Thailand usually comes out on top. The weather is nice, the cost of living is relatively cheap, but the biggest incentive over in Thailand for foreign men has always been dating the local Thai ladies.

However, in recent years, Vietnam has made a name for itself in the tourism industry. Rapid economic development, coupled with low cost of living and gorgeous Vietnamese girls, have started to get the country noticed in the eyes of foreign men.

But which country is better for dating and how do the girls from each country compare against one another?

A lot of Vietnamese girls have beautiful pale white skin, especially in the northern parts of Vietnam. Vietnamese girls also possess more of an east Asian type of look to them vs Thai girls, however, there are a number of Chinese Thais that also reside in Thailand, especially in the china town area in Bangkok. These Chinese Thai’s that are of mixed ancestry tend to exhibit more of the East Asian features.

Don’t get me wrong. This is not to say that pale skin is more beautiful than dark skin. Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, I do prefer those dark skin Thai girls. But I will be neutral here. It is up to everyone’s taste and skin color should not matter at all.

I found Vietnamese girls to be a bit curvier than Thai women. And that is a bit plus for me. Vietnamese girls despite being petite and small, are very well proportioned in all the right places. Now when it comes to height, I would have to give it to Thai girls. Thai women are slightly taller because they have better access to more nutritious food and better healthcare compared to Vietnam. Vietnamese girls tend to be on the shorter side, between 5’1 and 5’2. But that also makes a lot of guys crazy. Thais are taller and do have some attractive girls, Vietnamese girls tended to have prettier faces and more well-proportioned bodies.

When it comes to fashion, I would give it to Thais. This may be due to Thailand girls having higher purchasing power, as well as having access to a lot more international brands. Bangkok is a fashion hub in South East Asia so it’s not surprising to see Thai girls dressed much more elegantly and classy when compared to Vietnamese girls.

Thai girls dress well, wouldn’t go out without makeup and perfume. Make sure you also dress well on a date.

Thai women are getting bigger and their waistlines are expanding. There are more overweight Thai women than overweight Vietnamese girls. But there is also abundance of slim cute Thai girls everywhere. In Vietnam, finding an overweight girl is rare.

Traditional Vietnamese and Thai cuisines rely on rice noodles, plain rice, vegetables, and herbs. However, Thais are eating more international fast food than before. In Vietnam, access to western food is not that common at all, and also quite expensive, this has really helped the cute Vietnamese girls remain slim and pretty.

Vietnamese girls are very friendly and always giving you smiles. They have a happy attitude and they give you a warm welcome. On the other hand, Thai girls are polite and friendly, with their famous polite kha at the end of the sentences when talking, But you don’t feel the same kind of warm welcome that you get when you talk to Vietnamese girls. It takes longer for the Thai girls to warm up. However, after a short while, they will be as warm as the Vietnamese girls.

However, once you are able to plow through this shyness and guarded outer exterior, you will be welcomed with a warm interior similar to that of a Vietnamese girl.

A negative trait about both Thai and Vietnamese girls is that they are too jealous, controlling, and clingy. This is just a normal trait of girls in Southeast Asia. You will find the same in The Philippines and Lao. And even you will find this with Singapore girls, even with the ones who are more independent and liberated. For someone coming from a western country, this can feel overwhelming. Some people say, this is their way of showing you they care about you, but I don’t agree with that. They are just afraid to lose you and lose face with their families and friends.

Jealousy is a big issue with both Vietnamese and Thai girls. Both can be highly jealous and oftentimes will make you feel like you are being cross-examined. Asking to see your phone is not uncommon, along with the video calling you at random times to check up on you if they even have a hint of suspicion that your cheating. It’s extremely tempting and easy to cheat there when you have so many beautiful girls everywhere. These girls definitely know about this, which is why they are so guarded and always try to keep you under their control.

A very positive trait is that both Thai and Vietnamese girls want to take care of you. They will cook for you, massage you, even cut your toenails. Taking care of their man is an everyday obligation for these girls due to strong traditional gender roles. These girls once they are devoted to you, really know how to take good care of you.

Due to the ultra-conservative nature of Vietnamese girls, don’t expect easy hookups here in Vietnam. You are going to need to be a bit more patient and put some work into the relationship before she’s willing to sleep with you. Thai girls, on the other hand, have a much more liberal attitude towards hooking up. This is why oftentimes you see a lot of foreign men that were very successful in bedding a lot of women in Thailand then come over to Vietnam and fail. They expected things to be just as easy in Thailand and used the same game plan.

Getting girls requires a different set of skills over in Vietnam, along with more persistence and patience. If you expect to get laid with different girls every night, Vietnam is not the place for you. But on the other hand, if you want a nice conservative girl as a girlfriend who you could potentially marry one day and be the future mother of your children then Vietnam is the perfect place for that. If you are just looking for short-term and casual relationships, Thailand is better. Of course, there are also a lot of beautiful Thai girls that would make excellent girlfriends. But there are more conservative girls in Vietnam.

Both Vietnamese and Thai girls really know how to take good care of themselves and act like a lady. They have good manners and they don’t want to lose face. They embrace their femininity and they are proud of it. That is another reason that makes them so attractive to Western men.

Southeast Asian ladies are feminine and they want you to lead. Show them you are the Alpha man, take the lead on dates and be a man. When it comes to femininity, you can’t go wrong with girls from either country.

therefore, I would classify this as a tie.

Thai girls are great for chilling out and partying. They love to go out with their friends to eat Thai food. They like drinking and dancing.

Vietnamese girls on the other hand, seldom visit bars as it is looked down upon in their culture. There are some who would go to Bui Vien street having a beer with her friends. But some of those may be hunting for a foreign man for money. The conservative ones will be enjoying a coffee or milk tea with her friends. Vietnamese girls have fun cooking at home.

Both countries have low levels of English. Thais are more exposed to tourists, so Thai girls have a better level of English. Due to the more widespread exposure to foreigners and western values for quite a long time, Thai girls have taken more of an interest in learning English. In Vietnam, there are more tourists from China, Korea, and Japan, so the focus has shifted towards learning other Asian languages.

With everything taken into consideration, I would have to say Vietnamese girls are ahead of Thai girls. Not only are they beautiful and friendly, but they are also ambitious, feminine, and are dripping with sex appeal yet still remaining conservative.

However, if you’re looking for something more casual or short term, Thais make great companions. And they are beautiful too and good in the kitchen.

At the end of the day, you really can’t go wrong dating girls from either country.

Vietnam has become increasingly popular as an expat destination in recent years and it is now recognized as a safe place for foreigners to live and work. Expats are attracted by the nice weather, low cost of living, lively culture, and the steady improvements in Vietnam’s infrastructure.

Vietnam is a fast-growing expat destination, and one of the more popular places for retirees, expats, and digital nomads living in Southeast Asia. The country offers expats a quality of life that is, in many ways, better than that of neighboring nations. The food is diverse and delicious, the cost of living is low, and there are a number of well-paid jobs available.

The most popular destination among expats, Hanoi is home to a large expat community, many of whom are ESL teachers or work for NGOs. It is easy to find international foods, as well as English-friendly businesses and health services. Many expats, even those in the south, prefer the vibe in Hanoi. The weather in the winter, however, is cooler with an average of 15° C. The city is less traffic and congested, which many expats prefer to the rapid, chaotic pace of life in Saigon.

Vietnam currently offers no retirement visa scheme, and retirees living in Vietnam are required to make use of either short-term tourist visas, which are available for a maximum of three months at a time, or five-year long-term visas, which need to be renewed at immigration offices every three months.

While neither of these options is ideal, they are both relatively affordable for those wishing to retire to Vietnam, although the reporting to the Immigration Department of Vietnam is inconvenient (similar to the 90-day reporting in Thailand).

Three-month tourist visas can be acquired from Vietnamese embassies abroad, and are issued to all those that have the minimum funds available to travel in Vietnam – a figure that’s typically around $1,000USD per month spent in the country. It’s an option that many retirees have been using for several years – reapplying and re-entering as their visas expire. Tourists in Vietnam, including those staying long-term using a tourist visa, are able to apply for extensions while inside Vietnam by using any one of a number of local travel agents. These agents apply directly to the Immigration Department for an extension of stay – typically a three-month visa extension.

The alternative, and one that many retirees to Vietnam pursue, is to invest in a five-year multi-entry visa, which allows for multiple entries into Vietnam within a period not exceeding five years. The requirements to apply for one of these visas are higher than those for a simple three-month visa and may be off-putting to some applicants.
